As ever, my annual goals for 2023 didn't pan out, in the sense that I completely forgot about them and made no progress whatsoever.
No matter. We forge ahead with 2024 planning undeterred. This, at long last, will be my year.
And since it will be my year, I intend to make no small goals. My plan for 2024 is: join the ranks of the idle rich.
Sitting here at the end of 2023, I am neither rich nor idle. Far from it: last night I was on a Zoom call with my boss at 10 p.m., after working a 12-hour day already. On the day after Christmas! An idle rich would never.
What is the existence of the idle rich like? A reliable online source suggests the following:
They have ... much of their free time taken up by traveling, going to parties and galas, attending horse races and polo matches ....
As yet, none of my time is taken up with polo matches. I have a long ways to go.
I’m not a CPA but my calculations suggest I need an additional $3 million, free and clear, to become both rich and idle. That number is more than 10X our 2023 household income, and many times our 2023 savings rate—you see what I mean by “no small goals.”
How to get there?
Of course, that’s a very general outline of my approach. I intend to work out specifics along the way. If you would like to follow along, this blog is the best place to do so.
